INDORE — A major political controversy has erupted in Madhya Pradesh following the detention of Kulbhushan alias Nana Patwari, the younger brother of state Congress chief Jitu Patwari, by the Indore Police.
According to senior police officials, the Rajendra Nagar police intercepted a black SUV near Ret Mandi square on Thursday, July 9, 2026. Acting on targeted intelligence, law enforcement authorities arrested two suspected drug peddlers, identified as Irfan Khan (alias Golu Chanderi) and Sanjay Kaushal (alias Ronny).
The Narcotic Seizure and Interrogation
A search of the vehicle yielded 10.8 grams of brown sugar, a high-grade adulterated form of heroin. A forensic science laboratory (FSL) team arrived at the scene to formally verify the seized contraband. An FIR was promptly registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
During the initial on-site interrogation, the two arrested smugglers reportedly disclosed to the police that the consignment was being transported for delivery to specific local buyers.
"During questioning, the accused revealed that they were on their way to deliver the drugs to Nana Patwari and another individual named Manav Gangwani.
Based on this information, both individuals were taken into custody for questioning," stated Narendra Rawat, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Indore Zone 1.
Following an intense multi-hour interrogation session at the Rajendra Nagar police station to map out the alleged supply chain, both Nana Patwari and Gangwani were released late at night. Police officials noted that further legal steps would depend entirely on the evidentiary findings of the ongoing probe. The DCP also revealed that Nana Patwari has a prior criminal record, with nine cases registered against him between 2012 and 2023, including charges related to attempt to murder, assault, and criminal intimidation.
Congress Cries Foul, Alleges 'Revenge Politics'
The sudden police action drew immediate, sharp retaliation from the top leadership of the Madhya Pradesh Congress.
"The Indore Police have taken my brother into custody without any notice, sending a clear political message that the BJP is now taking 'revenge'!" Patwari wrote. He further alleged that the state government is weaponizing law enforcement agencies to silence political opponents who raise their voices against the administration.
Senior Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP Vivek Tankha also weighed in, stating that the Patwari family was initially left completely in the dark regarding Nana Patwari’s whereabouts and the nature of the alleged offense, prompting him to urge top state police officials to ensure transparency.
BJP Rejects Accusations
The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) strongly dismissed the allegations of political interference, emphasizing that the police acted independently based on concrete statements provided by arrested drug peddlers. BJP spokespersons maintained that the law is taking its natural course in a serious narcotics case and accused the Congress of attempting to shield individuals with criminal histories by wrapping the issue in political rhetoric.
The political climate in Madhya Pradesh remains highly volatile as investigators continue to verify the cell phone records and financial transactions of the accused to dismantle the local narcotics network.
