Are Foreign Countries Really Safe for Indians? Targeted Shooting in Canada Raises Alarm.

A 28-year-old Indian-origin man, identified as Dilraj Singh Gill, was killed in a targeted shooting in Burnaby, British Columbia, Canadian police confirmed. Authorities say the killing is believed to be connected to the ongoing gang conflict in BC, and the investigation is now being handled by the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT). Shooting Incident Details The attack occurred shortly before 5:30 pm local time on January 22, near the 3700 block of Canada Way, Burnaby, according to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP). Officers responding to reports of gunfire found Gill with critical injuries. Despite immediate life-saving efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene. Police also discovered a burned vehicle, which they now believe is directly connected to the homicide. Investigators suspect the shooter or shooters fled in this vehicle shortly after the attack. Targeted Killing Linked to Gang Conflict Authorities described the shooting as a planned and targeted attack. “Mr. Gill was known to police, and the shooting appears to have a nexus to the BC gang conflict,” the RCMP said. Sergeant Freda Fong of IHIT added that the incident has deeply unsettled the community due to the public nature of the attack. “A shooting, especially in a public place, is extremely troubling, not only for the police but for the entire community. Witness information will be crucial to hold those responsible accountable,” Fong said. Investigation Underway IHIT, working alongside Burnaby RCMP, the Lower Mainland Integrated Forensic Identification Service, and the BC Coroners Service, is gathering forensic evidence from the shooting scene and the vehicle. Investigators are urging anyone with dashcam or CCTV footage from the area to come forward. Specifically, officers are seeking recordings between 5:00 pm and 6:30 pm along Canada Way (Boundary Road to Willingdon Avenue) and in the Buxton Street area near Royal Oak Avenue and Forglen Drive. Earlier footage between 4:30 pm and 6:00 pm near Canada Way and Laurel Street is also requested. The RCMP emphasized that anyone with information can contact IHIT directly or submit tips anonymously through Crime Stoppers. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities have promised to release updates as new details emerge. Community Reaction The killing has left the local community shaken, highlighting concerns about gang-related violence in Burnaby. Residents and community leaders have expressed shock that such an attack could take place in a public area, emphasizing the need for vigilance and cooperation with police investigations.
