Bhubaneswar’s Radical Link: Who Is Sheikh Imran and Why Did Delhi Police Arrest Him?
By WaveINO Newsroom•Apr 11, 2026
The peaceful atmosphere of Odisha’s capital was jolted this Saturday as a high-profile security operation unfolded in the heart of the city.Sheikh Imran, a 22-year-old resident of the Unit-6 area in Bhubaneswar, was apprehended by the Delhi Police Special Branch in a coordinated strike with the local Odisha Police. The arrest follows a week of intense surveillance after the Delhi Police uncovered an "Odisha link" while interrogating a group of youths picked up in the national capital earlier this month.
The Social Media Web: Radicalization and National Security
Preliminary investigations suggest that Imran, an unemployed youth originally hailing from Cuttack, was an active member of a radical group. His involvement wasn’t just passive; authorities claim he used encrypted platforms like WhatsApp and Signal to propagate content on religious lines that was deemed detrimental to national security.
Sources indicate that the Delhi Police Special Cell had been tracking Imran’s digital footprint for several days. His social media activity on platforms like Instagram and Facebook allegedly contained "objectionable and anti-India" posts, sparking concerns about his influence on other local youths.During the raid at his Ganga Nagar residence, police recovered a laptop and mobile phone which are currently undergoing forensic examination.
Transit Remand and Further Investigation
Following his arrest on Friday, Imran was produced before the Sub-Divisional Judicial Magistrate (SDJM) in Bhubaneswar. The court granted the Delhi Police a transit remand, allowing them to take the suspect to Delhi for an in-depth interrogation. The Special Branch aims to unravel the full extent of his network and determine if there are broader links to extremist organizations operating across state borders.
The Bhubaneswar Police, led by DCP Suresh Dev Datta Singh, have assured full cooperation in the ongoing probe, emphasizing that the city’s security remains a top priority. As the investigation shifts to Delhi, officials are looking into whether Imran’s radicalization was self-driven or part of a larger, coordinated effort to incite unrest through digital platforms.
