A devastating road accident on the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway claimed the lives of four members of a Haryana family after their vehicle allegedly reversed on the high-speed highway following a missed exit. The tragic collision occurred near Saharanpur and has once again highlighted the dangers of violating expressway traffic rules.
According to preliminary police findings, the family was travelling in a Tata Tiago when the driver, identified as Praveen Kumar, reportedly missed the designated exit on the expressway. Instead of proceeding to the next exit, the vehicle allegedly began reversing in the left lane of the expressway—a manoeuvre that is strictly prohibited on access-controlled highways due to the high speeds of moving traffic.
Moments later, a Mahindra Scorpio travelling in the same direction crashed into the rear of the reversing hatchback. The impact was so severe that the Tata Tiago spun uncontrollably before overturning multiple times.
Praveen Kumar, his wife Preeti, her mother Sudesh, and their nine-year-old nephew Shivansh sustained fatal injuries in the collision. Emergency responders reached the scene shortly after the accident, but all four occupants of the Tiago were declared dead.
Police officials stated that reversing on an expressway constitutes a serious traffic violation and is considered an extremely dangerous act because vehicles travel at high speeds with limited reaction time. Investigators believe the illegal reverse manoeuvre played a significant role in the fatal crash. However, authorities are also examining the actions of the Mahindra Scorpio driver as part of the ongoing investigation to determine whether any additional factors contributed to the collision.
