Raipur, March 27, 2026 — Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai has hailed the Centre’s recent decision to slash excise duty on petrol and diesel as a “historic” and “pro-people” move, stating that it will bring much-needed relief to citizens across the country.
The Centre has reduced the special additional excise duty on petrol from ₹13 per litre to ₹3, while completely eliminating the ₹10 per litre duty on diesel. The decision comes at a time when global crude oil prices have surged sharply due to ongoing geopolitical tensions, particularly in the Middle East.
Relief Amid Global Crisis
Reacting to the move, Sai said the government’s decision reflects a strong commitment to protecting citizens from rising fuel costs. He emphasized that the step will directly benefit “140 crore Indians,” including farmers, labourers, and the middle class, who are most affected by inflationary pressures.
He further noted that despite global economic challenges, the Centre has taken a people-centric approach to ensure that the financial burden on households does not increase.
Shielding Consumers from Price Shock
The excise duty cuts are aimed at cushioning the domestic market from volatile international oil prices, which have seen a steep rise in recent weeks. According to reports, crude oil prices have jumped significantly due to disruptions in supply routes, including the strategic Strait of Hormuz.
The government has also introduced additional measures such as imposing windfall taxes on fuel exports to balance revenue losses and ensure stable domestic supply.
Praise for Leadership
Sai credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi for taking a timely and decisive step, calling it an example of “sensitivity and foresight.” He added that such decisions demonstrate the Centre’s focus on public welfare, especially during times of global uncertainty.
Mixed Impact Expected
While the announcement has been widely welcomed, experts suggest that the actual reduction in retail fuel prices may not be immediate. Oil marketing companies are currently facing high input costs and may absorb a portion of the tax relief to offset losses.
Conclusion:
The excise duty cut on fuel marks a significant policy move aimed at stabilizing prices and easing the burden on citizens. As global oil markets remain volatile, the effectiveness of this decision in delivering direct relief will depend on how the benefits are passed on to consumers in the coming weeks.
