Mob Vandalizes TMC Panchayat Chief’s House in Howrah Alleged Corruption in 100-Day Work Scheme

The simmering discontent surrounding rural welfare distribution in West Bengal boiled over into targeted public unrest over the weekend. On Sunday, a heavily coordinated mob of around 200 villagers stormed and severely vandalized the multi-story residence of a local Trinamool Congress (TMC) Gram Panchayat chief in the Amta locality of the Howrah district.

The violent siege was triggered by recurring, high-intent allegations of massive financial irregularities, bribery, and the demand for "cut money" (illegal commissions) regarding the state’s 100-day work scheme (MGNREGA) and multiple housing development initiatives.

Inside the Siege: Storming the Amta Residence

The targeted confrontation unfolded rapidly in the jurisdiction of the Joypur Police Station. The angry gathering, which included a prominent number of local rural workers and village women, organized an aggressive rally that culminated outside the heavily gated home of Anjali Dolui, the active TMC Panchayat Chief.

Protesters quickly breached the exterior perimeter walls. Armed with wooden sticks and stone blocks, the crowd executed widespread structural destruction:

  • Property Damage: Windows were shattered, and heavy household fittings, including air conditioning units and exterior electronic boards, were ripped from the masonry.

  • Arson & Destruction: Portions of furniture, apparel, and a significant volume of local administrative papers and identity logs were carried out into the courtyard and set ablaze.

  • The Escape: Realizing the volatility of the incoming crowd, Anjali Dolui and her husband managed to escape through a rear corridor minutes before the main group forced entry into the primary rooms.

Cut-Money and Extortion Schemes Alleged

Local residents participating in the agitation explicitly stated that their patience evaporated after local leaders continuously demanded up-front monetary kickbacks to release basic government entitlements.

Villagers, including local representatives Nazneen Begum and Rathin Mondal, openly accused the Panchayat leader and her spouse of running an institutional extortion racket. According to their testimonies, legitimate job card holders under the 100-day work scheme were regularly stripped of portions of their hard-earned daily wages. Furthermore, families alleged that funds intended for affordable rural housing infrastructure were intentionally routed away from genuinely impoverished households to reward political associates.

The structural gridlock surrounding the 100-day scheme has remained a point of extreme friction across rural Bengal, particularly after historical funding freezes by central ministries over structural corruption were countered by localized state-backed alternatives like Karmashree. However, as yesterday's events showcase, grassroots implementation continues to be plagued by deep-seated tension between rural laborers and regional administrators.

Heavy Police Cordon and Formal Legal Fallout

The Joypur Police, accompanied by reinforcements and emergency fire-fighting units, arrived at the site to scatter the crowds and put out the fires.

Acknowledging the extreme gravity of the situation, Howrah Rural Trinamool President Arunava Sen conceded that the anger could have taken an entirely fatal turn had the couple not cleared out in time. While the TMC leadership cautioned against public vigilantism and destruction of property, the local administration moved swiftly to validate the public's immediate legal complaints.

Law enforcement agencies have officially registered comprehensive criminal charges—including systemic fraud, financial misappropriation, and extortion—against the fleeing Panchayat chief and her husband. A heavy, continuous police detachment remains deployed across the Amta block to maintain order, while search operations are underway to locate the missing public officials to face formal interrogation.
