Hydroponic Weed Worth ₹4 Crore Seized at Bhubaneswar Airport: International Racket Busted

In a major breakthrough against international narcotics trafficking, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) and Customs officials executed a massive drug bust at Biju Patnaik International Airport (BPIA) on Tuesday morning, May 12, 2026. Authorities seized approximately 11 kilograms of high-grade hydroponic weed, valued at nearly ₹4 crore in the illegal market.

The operation, based on specific intelligence, has led to the detention of two individuals from Tamil Nadu who were attempting to smuggle the contraband into India from Thailand.

Modus Operandi and Arrests

The accused, identified as two youths from Tamil Nadu, were intercepted shortly after their arrival.

  • Concealment Technique: The 11 kg of weed was found hidden within their checked baggage to evade standard security protocols.

  • Intelligence-Led Strike: The DRI Bhubaneswar wing had developed precise inputs regarding the carriers, allowing for a swift interception at the airport.

  • Transit Point Concerns: This is not an isolated incident; Bhubaneswar is increasingly being monitored as a potential transit point for high-value narcotics destined for major Indian metros like Chennai and Kochi.

Why Hydroponic Weed is Flooding the Market

Unlike traditional cannabis grown in soil, hydroponic marijuana is cultivated using soil-less, nutrient-rich water solutions.

  1. Higher Potency: This variety boasts THC levels up to 30%, compared to the 3% found in conventional varieties.

  2. Market Demand: Often referred to as the "poor man’s cocaine" at elite rave parties, its demand has surged in urban centers.

  3. Controlled Growth: The indoor nature of its cultivation makes it easier for international cartels to produce high-quality yields year-round.

Ongoing Investigation

The two detained suspects are currently undergoing rigorous interrogation. Investigating authorities are working to uncover the "backward and forward linkages" to identify the masterminds in Bangkok and the intended recipients in India. Officials suspect the involvement of an organized international drug syndicate that uses fresh couriers for every trip to insulate the main operators from detection.
