IPL 2026 Playoff Chances: Which Teams Are Almost Qualified?

The IPL 2026 season has moved into a critical phase where every boundary and every wicket carries the weight of qualification. While we are still a few weeks away from the final league matches, the points table has begun to split the contenders from the pretenders. For fans in India, the tension is palpable as legendary franchises face the threat of early elimination while underdogs are rising to the occasion.

Punjab Kings: The Unstoppable Force

Punjab Kings (PBKS) have emerged as the team to beat this season. With 11 points from 6 matches and an unbeaten streak (5 wins, 1 No Result), they are practically one foot into the playoffs. Their balance, led by a firing top order and a disciplined bowling unit, has given them a healthy Net Run Rate (NRR) of +1.420. Historically, 16 points is the safe zone for qualification, meaning PBKS needs only three more wins from their remaining eight games to secure a spot.

RCB and RR: The Comfortable Contenders

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) are currently locked at 8 points each after 6 games. RCB holds a superior NRR of +1.171, thanks to some massive wins early in the tournament. Both teams have shown remarkable consistency. For RCB, the form of their middle order has been the clinical difference, while RR’s bowling depth continues to choke opponents in the death overs. Both franchises are well-positioned but cannot afford a losing streak in the upcoming "away" leg of the tournament.

The Mid-Table Chaos: SRH, DC, and GT

The battle for the fourth spot is where the real drama lies. Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) currently holds the edge with 6 points and a positive NRR of +0.566. However, Delhi Capitals (DC) and Gujarat Titans (GT) are breathing down their necks with 6 points as well, though they have played one game fewer than SRH. This "cluster" in the middle means that the head-to-head matches between these three teams will likely decide who makes the cut.

The Crisis for the Giants: CSK, MI, and KKR

In a surprising turn of events, the three most successful teams in IPL history—Chennai Super Kings, Mumbai Indians, and Kolkata Knight Riders—are languishing at the bottom.

  • CSK: With only 4 points from 6 games, the defending spirit of the Yellow Army is being tested.

  • MI: Hardik Pandya’s side has managed only one win in 5 games. They now need to win at least 7 of their remaining 9 matches to stay in the hunt.

  • KKR: Despite a recent win against RR, they remain in 9th place. Their path is the toughest, requiring a near-perfect run from here on.
