IPL 2026 Ticket Scam 2026: How AI Forgers Are Duping Cricket Fans

The euphoria of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season is being overshadowed by a wave of sophisticated IPL ticket fraud. Cybercriminals are increasingly using advanced technology, including Artificial Intelligence (AI) and expansive phishing infrastructures, to target desperate cricket fans. Recent incidents across major venues like Delhi, Bengaluru, and Lucknow have raised serious questions about the security of current ticketing systems and the safety of digital transactions.

The Rise of AI-Generated Forgery

In a groundbreaking case during the LSG vs. RCB clash at Ekana Stadium, Lucknow police busted an interstate gang that used AI tools and graphic design software to forge tickets.

  • Methodology: The gang reportedly used ChatGPT to gather technical details like ticket dimensions and paper quality to ensure their fakes resembled original passes.

  • Distribution: Counterfeit tickets were sold outside stadium gates at discounted rates to unsuspecting fans.

  • Result: Victims discovered the fraud only at the entry gates when their tickets failed to scan.

Expansive Phishing Networks Exposed

Beyond physical forgery, massive online phishing networks are impersonating legitimate ticketing brands.

  • Fake Domains: Researchers identified a flurry of new domains registered between March and April 2026 designed to mimic popular booking platforms.

  • Data Harvesting: These sites do not just steal money; they harvest sensitive user data—including names, phone numbers, and email addresses—which is then sold to other scam operations.

  • The "Admin Panel": Investigation into the backend of these sites revealed "phishing kits" that allow operators to manually dispatch fake PDF tickets once a payment is verified through UPI.

Security Crackdown and BCCI Response

The BCCI has responded to these "anomalies and irregularities" by tightening security and behavioral protocols. While the primary focus of their latest seven-page advisory is anti-corruption and player safety, it underscores a tournament-wide push for stricter compliance with established protocols.

In Bengaluru, a case was registered after a woman was defrauded of ₹52,500 by individuals promising tickets via WhatsApp. Authorities have stressed that screenshots or photos of tickets are often insufficient for entry, as the new M-ticket system requires the live app to be opened for QR scanning.

How to Buy Tickets Safely

To avoid falling victim to IPL ticket fraud, fans are urged to use only the official ticketing partners designated by the franchises:

  • BookMyShow: Official partner for Gujarat Titans, KKR, LSG, and Mumbai Indians.

  • District by Zomato: Partner for CSK, Delhi Capitals, Punjab Kings, Sunrisers Hyderabad, and Rajasthan Royals.

  • Official Team Apps/Websites: Notably, RCB tickets are primarily available through their dedicated app or website.
