Is India About to Overtake Russia With a Deadlier-Than-S-400 Air Defense System?
India is pushing the boundaries of indigenous defence technology with an ambitious plan to build an advanced air defence system that could match or even surpass the capabilities of Russia’s S-400 Triumph — one of the world’s most formidable long-range surface-to-air missile systems. The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is leading this effort under Project Kusha, part of a broader initiative known as Mission Sudarshan Chakra.
Why This Matters
The S-400 Triumph, deployed by Russia and procured by India, can detect and engage aerial threats at ranges up to 400 km and altitudes up to 30 km, simultaneously tracking and engaging dozens of targets including aircraft, cruise missiles, and ballistic threats.
However, India wants to reduce dependence on foreign systems and strengthen its strategic autonomy by creating a homegrown long-range air defence shield that can integrate seamlessly with its existing defensive network.
What Is Project Kusha?
Project Kusha is an indigenous long-range air defence system being developed by DRDO to offer multi-layered protection against modern aerial threats — including enemy fighters, drones, cruise missiles and precision weapons — with a performance envelope comparable to or even exceeding the S-400 system.
Key Features Under Development
-
Multiple interceptor missiles:
-
M1 – early interception at ~150 km range
-
M2 – mid-range engagement at ~250 km
-
M3 – long-range interceptor targeting up to ~350–400 km or more
This layered approach maximizes hit probability across altitudes and threat profiles.
-
-
Advanced radar and fire-control: Highly capable tracking and surveillance radars to detect and engage multiple targets simultaneously.
-
Indigenous integration: The system will be fully integrated into India’s Integrated Air Command and Control System (IACCS), strengthening detection and response coordination across services.
DRDO aims to begin user trials of early variants of these missiles by 2026 and beyond, with further development through 2028 and beyond.
Mission Sudarshan Chakra: Bigger Vision
Project Kusha is a core component of Mission Sudarshan Chakra — India’s planned multi-layered air and missile defence shield. The mission combines long-range systems like Project Kusha with existing systems such as Akash, Barak-8, short-range interceptors and space-based sensors to protect strategic and civilian targets across the country.
According to defence planners, Mission Sudarshan Chakra will evolve over the next decade, continually enhancing detection, tracking and interception capabilities to stay ahead of emerging threats.
Strategic Impact
If realized as planned, Project Kusha would:
-
Deepen India’s self-reliance in critical defence technology.
-
Provide a credible deterrent that blunts threats from hostile aircraft, missiles, and drones.
-
Reduce reliance on expensive imports and foreign supply chains.
Experts believe the indigenous system could eventually rival top global air defence shields, contributing to enhanced regional security and strategic deterrence.
