Gumla (Jharkhand) — February 23, 2026: A serious criminal case involving a minor girl has come to light in Gumla district, prompting a police investigation and public concern. Authorities say a 16‑year‑old girl was allegedly assaulted by a group of 8–10 unidentified men while returning home from a fair with a friend on Friday night.

What Happened

According to police officials, the incident took place under the Raidih police station limits when the girl and her male companion were walking home after attending a local mela. The group allegedly confronted them, assaulted the friend and forced the girl away to a nearby secluded spot, where the alleged assault occurred.

The girl later returned home and informed her family, who approached the police. Based on her statement, the Raidih police registered an FIR on Saturday and began an investigation. A manhunt to locate and arrest the suspects is reportedly underway.

Law Enforcement Response

Officials from the local police have stated that they are conducting search operations to trace the accused, collecting evidence and recording witness statements. Senior officers are overseeing the case, and all possible leads are being pursued.

Legal Framework

Under Indian law, crimes involving sexual offences against minors are investigated under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, which provides for stringent punishment in such cases. Police sources say relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the POCSO Act have been invoked in the FIR registered in this matter.

Conclusion

The alleged assault on a minor girl in Gumla, Jharkhand, has once again highlighted the urgent need for stronger child safety measures and community vigilance in rural and semi-urban areas. With authorities actively investigating and searching for the suspects, the public and local leaders are calling for swift justice and enhanced security for children, especially those traveling alone after dark. Cases like these underscore the importance of enforcing the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and ensuring that perpetrators are held accountable under the law.
