JABALPUR, MAY 2, 2026 — Rescue operations at the Bargi Dam reservoir have entered their third day following a devastating cruise boat capsize on the Narmada River that has claimed nine lives.
The Incident
The tragedy occurred around 6:00 PM on Thursday, April 30, when a 90-seater cruise boat operated by the Madhya Pradesh Tourism Department was caught in a sudden, violent storm.
Eyewitnesses and survivors described a scene of absolute chaos as large waves shattered the vessel's windows, causing it to tilt and sink within minutes.
Rescue and Recovery Efforts
Safe Evacuations: Of the 41 identified passengers, 28 have been rescued safely.
Death Toll: Nine bodies have been recovered, including eight women and a four-year-old child.
Current Search: More than 200 personnel from the NDRF, SDRF, and 20 Army divers airlifted from Agra are scouring a 5 km radius in the dam’s backwaters.
The Missing: Operations are currently focused on tracing Kamraj (an Ordnance Factory employee) and three children: Tamil (5), Vijay Soni (6), and Mayuram (5).
Heartbreaking Discoveries and Safety Lapses
Rescuers shared a haunting detail from Friday's recovery: the body of 39-year-old Marina Massey was found clutching her four-year-old son, Trishaan, in a final embrace beneath the water.
The tragedy has sparked intense scrutiny of safety protocols. Survivors allege that life jackets were not provided at the start of the journey and were only distributed in a frantic scramble once the boat began to sink.
Government Action
Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has ordered a high-level probe into the tragedy and announced a compensation of ₹4 lakh for the families of the deceased.
Following the accident, the state government has:
Suspended the manager of Hotel Maikal Resort and the Bargi Boat Club.
Dismissed three crew members.
Ordered an immediate ban on the operation of similar cruise vessels across the state pending a safety review.
Search efforts continue as divers race against time and challenging underwater visibility.
