Odisha Weather Update Today: IMD Issues Yellow Alert for Thunderstorms

Odisha is currently experiencing a significant atmospheric shift. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has officially issued a Yellow Warning, signaling that residents should "be aware" of deteriorating weather conditions. While a yellow alert is not as severe as a red alert, the combination of high-velocity winds and lightning poses a genuine threat to life and property, especially in coastal and northern belts.

The primary regions expected to bear the brunt of this activity include:

  • Puri and Khurda: Expect heavy rain and wind.

  • Cuttack: Sudden thundersqualls likely during the afternoon.

  • Mayurbhanj: Higher risk of lightning strikes in open areas.

The cause behind this turbulence is a mix of moisture incursion from the Bay of Bengal and a localized cyclonic circulation. When these humid winds meet the intense heat accumulated over the Odisha plains, it creates the perfect recipe for convective storms, often referred to locally as Kalbaishakhi or Nor'westers.

Impact of 50 kmph Gusty Winds

While 50 kmph may not sound as intimidating as a cyclone, these gusts are strong enough to cause localized damage. The IMD has highlighted several risks associated with today's forecast:

  1. Structural Damage: Weak or thatched houses and temporary sheds may suffer roof damage.

  2. Uprooted Trees: Dead branches or shallow-rooted trees could fall, leading to road blockages.

  3. Power Disruptions: Wind-blown debris often interferes with overhead power lines, leading to temporary outages in Cuttack and Khurda.

  4. Agricultural Loss: Standing crops and horticultural plantations, particularly mango and papaya, are at risk from both wind and potential hailstorms.

Safety Protocols: What You Should Do

The most dangerous element of today’s weather is not the rain, but the lightning. Odisha remains one of the most lightning-prone states in India. To ensure your safety during the yellow alert period, follow these guidelines:

  • Seek Immediate Shelter: If you hear thunder, you are within striking distance of lightning. Move to a "pucca" (permanent) building immediately.

  • Avoid Open Fields: Farmers and outdoor workers in Mayurbhanj and surrounding areas are advised to suspend activities and move away from tall trees or isolated structures.

  • Unplug Electronics: High-voltage surges during lightning can destroy household appliances. It is wise to unplug computers and televisions until the storm passes.

  • Stay Off the Water: If you are near the coast in Puri, avoid venturing into the sea or standing on the beach during the storm's peak.

The Road Ahead: Forecast for the Week

The IMD suggests that this period of instability may persist for the next 48 hours. While the intensity might fluctuate, the moisture levels remain high. Temperatures, which had been climbing toward the 40°C mark, are expected to drop by 2-3°C due to the rain, providing some temporary relief from the humid heat.

However, residents are encouraged to keep monitoring local news and IMD bulletins. Weather patterns in April are notoriously unpredictable, and a yellow alert can quickly escalate if the storm system intensifies over the Bay of Bengal.
