OTET Syllabus 2026: Detailed Paper 1 & 2 Exam Pattern & Topics

Securing a teaching position in Odisha's government schools requires more than just a B.Ed or D.El.Ed degree; it requires qualifying the Odisha Teacher Eligibility Test (OTET). Comprehensive Breakdown of OTET Paper 1 Syllabus

Paper 1 is designed for candidates who intend to teach students in Classes I to V. The questions focus on the psychology of teaching and learning relevant to the 6-11 age group.

1. Child Development and Pedagogy (30 Marks)

This section is the backbone of the exam. It covers:

  • Understanding Child Development: Principles, stages, and influences of heredity and environment.

  • Learning Process: Motivation, classroom environment, and theories of learning.

  • Inclusive Education: Addressing the needs of diverse learners including CWSN (Children with Special Needs).

  • Pedagogical Approaches: Learner-centered and competency-based teaching.

2. Language I - Odia/Hindi/Telugu/Urdu/Bengali (30 Marks)

Candidates must choose one regional language. The focus is on:

  • Language comprehension (unseen passages and poems).

  • Grammar and vocabulary.

  • Pedagogy of language development.

3. Language II - English (30 Marks)

This paper is compulsory for all. It includes:

  • Reading comprehension.

  • Grammar (Tenses, Articles, Prepositions, and Voice).

  • English language teaching methods (LSRW skills).

4. Mathematics (30 Marks)

The syllabus covers basic arithmetic and geometry:

  • Number system, HCF, LCM, and Fractions.

  • Shapes, Measurement, and Data Handling.

  • Pedagogy: Nature of mathematics and diagnostic teaching.

5. Environmental Studies (30 Marks)

This section includes topics like:

  • Family and Friends, Food, Shelter, and Water.

  • Natural Resources and Odisha-specific geography (Rivers, Festivals, and Wildlife).

OTET Paper 2 Syllabus: Upper Primary Level

Paper 2 is for those targeting Classes VI to VIII. While the core sections (CDP and Languages) remain similar, the difficulty level is higher, aligned with the 11-14 age group.

Optional Subjects (60 Marks)

In Paper 2, candidates must choose between two streams:

  • Category A (Mathematics & Science): 30 questions from Math (Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry) and 30 questions from Science (Physics, Chemistry, Biology).

  • Category B (Social Studies): 30 questions from History & Political Science and 30 questions from Geography.

Strategic Tips for High Ranking

With no negative marking, the OTET 2026 exam allows you to attempt all questions. However, to score above the qualifying marks (60% for General, 50% for SC/ST/OBC), focus heavily on Child Development & Pedagogy. This section often determines the final result as it appears in both papers. Practice previous years' questions to get accustomed to the Odia-English bilingual phrasing.
