Pakistan Under Drone Siege? Nowshera Depot Targeted as Tensions With Afghanistan Explode!

In the last quarter of February 2026, one of South Asia’s most complex border disputes escalated sharply. Relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan’s Taliban government have reached a bitter turning point, involving not only border skirmishes but also reports of drone attacks and aerial operations. This is the most serious situation since previous ceasefire attempts, posing a major threat to regional peace and stability.

 Background of the Tensions

Pakistan and Afghanistan share a long border along the Durand Line, which is of historical, political, and military significance. Over the past months, cross-border firing, militant movements, and attacks on military installations have strained relations. Although there was a temporary ceasefire in October 2025, tensions remained, culminating in heightened confrontations in February 2026.

 Drone Strikes and Pakistan’s Response

Recently, Pakistan claimed that a militant group called Fitna al-Khawarij attempted drone attacks in Abbottabad, Swabi, and Nowshera, which were successfully intercepted by the country’s advanced anti-drone systems.
Federal authorities said the drones aimed to target Pakistani cities and military installations, but all were destroyed before reaching their objectives.

These incidents, while causing no casualties or damage, underscore the seriousness of the border threat. Pakistan has also imposed a temporary nationwide drone flight ban to maintain control over its airspace.

 Aerial Strikes and Counteractions

Alongside drone events, Pakistan launched “Operation Ghazab-lil-Haq”, carrying out large-scale airstrikes on Afghan territory. The Pakistan Air Force reportedly targeted Taliban checkpoints, command posts, and ammunition depots and brigade headquarters.

Official statements claimed that many Taliban positions, tanks, and military equipment were destroyed, and hundreds of fighters were targeted.

On the other hand, Afghan authorities called these strikes “unjustified aggression,” claiming that both military and, at times, civilian casualties resulted.

The Growing Role of Drone Technology

These events show how drones are reshaping modern warfare:

  • Small, low-cost drones: Fast, unpredictable, and able to strike deep into enemy territory.

  • Anti-drone systems: Countries like Pakistan deploy advanced technology to detect and neutralize UAVs.

  • New forms of cross-border conflict: Drone attacks have made skirmishes beyond artillery fire, introducing aerial tactical elements.

 Regional Implications

The escalation is not limited to the two countries; it has broader consequences:

🇵🇰 For Pakistan:

  • Need to strengthen internal security

  • Prevent cross-border movement of militant groups

  • Use advanced technology to secure airspace

🇦🇫 For Afghanistan:

  • Damage to defense installations and military targets

  • Increased diplomatic and propaganda pressure

  • Potential risks for civilians in affected areas

 The Path to Peace

Although border skirmishes have persisted for decades, the only sustainable solution lies in dialogue and diplomacy. Military operations can be dangerous for civilians and the economies of both nations.

While drones and modern aerial technology are reshaping the nature of war, the path to lasting peace still depends on negotiation, compromise, and confidence-building.
