Kolkata’s Biggest Cyber Bust? Industrialist Pawan Ruia Held for Multi-State Racket

The legacy of the Ruia Group, once synonymous with industrial giants like Dunlop and Jessop, has taken a sharp turn toward the criminal courts. On Tuesday evening, the Cyber Crime Wing of the West Bengal Police apprehended Pawan Ruia just hours after the Calcutta High Court vacated the interim protection previously granted to him and his family.

The Spark: A ₹93-Lakh Investment Scam

The investigation began with a specific complaint from Swapan Kumar Mondal, a senior citizen residing in the Eco Park area. Mondal was allegedly induced to install a mobile application named "KKRMF.apk" under the guise of a high-return investment scheme. He ended up losing ₹93 lakh.

When the Bidhannagar Cyber Crime Police began tracing the digital footprint of the stolen funds, they discovered a rabbit hole that led straight to the Ruia Center at Syed Amir Ali Avenue. The funds weren't just sitting in a single account; they were being cycled through a sophisticated "washing machine" of corporate current accounts.

A Nationwide Web of Deception

While the initial complaint was local, the scale is national. Data from the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (NCRP) has linked the accounts and entities associated with Ruia to at least 1,379 separate fraud complaints across India.

The investigation highlights three critical pillars of the alleged racket:

  1. Shell Companies: Police have identified 148 shell companies used to layer the money. Interestingly, 11 directors across these firms were found to be on the boards of over 180 different entities.
  2. Cryptocurrency Laundering: To bypass traditional banking oversight and move money across borders, approximately ₹170 crore was allegedly converted into various cryptocurrencies.
  3. Command and Control: Investigators claim these accounts were operated under the direct instructions of Pawan Ruia from his headquarters.

Legal Maneuvers and the High Court’s Move

The arrest was not a sudden strike but the culmination of a month-long legal battle. In December 2025, the Calcutta High Court had granted anticipatory bail to Pawan Ruia and his children, Raghav and Pallavi. However, on March 31, 2026, the court withdrew this protection, noting the gravity of the new evidence presented by the state regarding the Bidhannagar and Barrackpore cases.

This isn't Ruia's first brush with the law. In 2016, he was arrested in connection with the theft of railway equipment from the Jessop factory premises, spending significant time in judicial custody.

What’s Next?

Pawan Ruia is scheduled to be produced before the Bidhannagar ACJM Court today. As the police continue to track the "proceeds of crime," the focus shifts to his associates. In late 2025, an associate named Rahul Verma was intercepted at Delhi Airport while attempting to flee to London, suggesting that the network had deep international ties.

The Ruia family has categorically denied the charges, but with a trail of nearly 1,400 victims and a ₹315-crore hole in the digital economy, the "Turnaround Tycoon" finds himself in the center of a storm that cannot be easily settled with a corporate restructuring.
