In a major breakthrough for Odisha Police, investigators in Puri have solved a murder case that was allegedly staged to resemble a fatal road accident. Authorities confirmed the arrest of the prime accused and the chief conspirator in connection with the death of Tapu Nayak, a resident of the Bali Upara slum in the Penthakata area.
The incident initially appeared to be a tragic hit-and-run accident when Nayak’s body was discovered near Dhobakhala in Penthakata on March 28, 2026. However, police officials soon noticed inconsistencies at the crime scene that raised suspicions about the circumstances surrounding the death.
According to investigators, Tapu Nayak had reportedly left his home on the previous night to meet a female acquaintance in the Penthakata area. Early assumptions pointed toward a traffic-related fatality, but forensic experts later uncovered evidence suggesting a deliberate and violent attack.
A joint forensic examination conducted by personnel from the Sea Beach Police and Marine Police revealed that the victim had sustained deep injuries caused by sharp weapons rather than impact wounds typically associated with road accidents. Investigators believe the attack took place late at night and resulted in the victim’s immediate death.
Police officials stated that the accused allegedly attempted to disguise the murder scene as a road accident to mislead investigators and avoid suspicion. The breakthrough came after authorities reviewed CCTV footage from nearby locations and conducted extensive questioning of local residents.
Following the evidence trail, police arrested the primary suspects believed to be involved in both the killing and the conspiracy to stage the scene. Authorities are currently investigating the exact motive behind the murder, though officials indicated that personal rivalry or previous enmity may have played a role.
The case has intensified concerns about rising criminal activity in Puri. Just days before the arrests, another violent incident was reported in the Kanas area, where a man identified as Mrutyunjaya Bharimal was allegedly assaulted and targeted in an attempted attack involving a speeding motorcycle.
In response to the recent incidents, Puri Superintendent of Police Prateek Singh has reportedly formed special investigative teams to monitor criminal activities and strengthen law enforcement operations across the district.
Police have urged residents to remain alert and cooperate with authorities as investigations continue into the wider criminal network potentially linked to the Tapu Nayak murder case.
The incident has once again highlighted the increasing role of forensic science and surveillance technology in uncovering complex crimes that are initially designed to mislead investigators.
