Bengali Actor Rahul Arunoday Banerjee Passes Away After Drowning During Shoot in Odisha

The Bengali film industry is in a state of profound shock following the tragic demise of popular actor Rahul Arunoday Banerjee. The actor reportedly drowned while filming at Talsari Beach, near the Odisha-West Bengal border. This incident has raised serious questions regarding safety protocols on film sets, prompting the All Indian Cine Workers Association (AICWA) to intervene and demand a high-level investigation from the Chief Ministers of both West Bengal and Odisha.

The Incident: What Happened at Talsari Beach?

According to preliminary reports, Rahul Arunoday Banerjee was on location at Talsari Beach—a popular tourist spot on the border of Odisha and West Bengal—for the filming of the TV serial 'Bhole Baba Par Karega.' Sources suggest that while filming a scene or during a break near the water, Rahul was swept away by a sudden strong tide or stepped into a deep underwater trench.

Despite immediate rescue efforts by the crew and locals, he was unconscious when pulled out. He was rushed to the Digha Sub-divisional Hospital, where doctors tragically declared him brought dead.

AICWA Alleges Gross Negligence

The All Indian Cine Workers Association (AICWA) has taken a stern stand, labeling the incident a result of "Criminal Negligence." The association claims that the production house failed to provide essential safety measures, such as professional divers, life jackets, or emergency medical teams, while shooting in a high-risk coastal area.

Key Demands by AICWA:

  • Registration of FIR: Immediate filing of a criminal case (under Section 302/304) against the producers for failing to ensure actor safety.
  • Joint State Inquiry: A coordinated judicial investigation by the West Bengal and Odisha governments.
  • Financial Compensation: A compensation of ₹1 crore for the actor's bereaved family, to be paid by the production company.
  • Safety Reforms: Stricter enforcement of labor laws and safety guidelines on all outdoor shooting sets.

A Legacy Cut Short

The news has sent ripples of grief across the entertainment world. West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee expressed her condolences, stating, "I am deeply shocked by the untimely demise of Rahul. He was a versatile actor and a wonderful soul. This is an irreparable loss to Tollywood."

Rahul Arunoday Banerjee shot to fame with his debut in the cult classic 'Chirodini Tumi Je Amar.' Over the years, he established himself as a powerhouse performer with roles in Zulfiqar, Byomkesh Gotro, and various acclaimed television dramas. He is survived by his wife, actress Priyanka Sarkar, and their son.
