A Muharram procession in Ratlam district of Madhya Pradesh ended in tragedy late Thursday night after a tall metal tazia reportedly touched a live 11kV overhead power line, resulting in the deaths of three people and leaving several others seriously injured.
The incident occurred in Ratlam's Mewati Mohalla area, where hundreds of devotees had gathered to participate in the annual Muharram procession. According to officials, the victims were carrying a large metal tazia when it came into contact with the high-voltage electricity line, causing a powerful electric shock that spread through those holding or standing close to the structure.
The deceased have been identified as Rashid Khan (32), Saddu Hussain (40), and Arbaz Khan. Emergency services rushed the injured to nearby hospitals, where at least ten people were treated for severe burn injuries. Five of the injured remain in critical condition and are receiving treatment at Ratlam Medical College.
Investigation Underway
Police officials stated that the procession has traditionally followed the same route every year without any major incidents. Preliminary findings suggest that the tazia may have been lifted higher than usual while passing beneath the overhead power line, leading to the fatal contact.
Authorities also revealed that organizers had reportedly been advised beforehand to ensure that tall structures remained below the height of overhead electricity lines. Investigators are now examining whether these safety instructions were ignored or whether the electricity infrastructure itself posed a hazard.
Negligence Angle Being Probed
Officials have launched an investigation into whether negligence by the procession organizers or the electricity department contributed to the accident.
Among the key questions being examined are:
- Whether the overhead power line met the required safety clearance.
- Whether organizers complied with official safety advisories.
- If adequate coordination existed between civic authorities, the electricity department, and event organizers before the procession.
- Whether additional preventive measures could have avoided the tragedy.
Authorities have indicated that responsibility will be determined after a detailed technical and administrative inquiry.
Safety Concerns During Religious Processions
The Ratlam tragedy has once again highlighted the importance of safety planning during large religious gatherings. Temporary structures such as tazias, idols, chariots, and decorative arches can pose significant risks when they pass beneath overhead electrical infrastructure.
Experts often recommend route inspections, coordination with electricity departments, height restrictions for structures, and deployment of emergency response teams before major public processions to reduce the risk of such incidents.
Community in Mourning
The accident has left the local community in shock as families mourn the loss of their loved ones. Rescue teams, police personnel, and healthcare workers responded quickly after the incident, helping evacuate the injured and restore order at the scene.
Officials have assured that a thorough investigation will be conducted and appropriate action will be taken if any lapses in safety or negligence are established.
As the injured continue to receive treatment, the Ratlam electrocution tragedy serves as a sobering reminder of the need for strict safety compliance during public and religious events, particularly where high-voltage electrical infrastructure is present.
