A Muharram procession in Ratlam district of Madhya Pradesh ended in tragedy late Thursday night after a tall metal tazia reportedly touched a live 11kV overhead power line, resulting in the deaths of three people and leaving several others seriously injured.
The incident occurred in Ratlam's Mewati Mohalla area, where hundreds of devotees had gathered to participate in the annual Muharram procession. According to officials, the victims were carrying a large metal tazia when it came into contact with the high-voltage electricity line, causing a powerful electric shock that spread through those holding or standing close to the structure.
The deceased have been identified as Rashid Khan (32), Saddu Hussain (40), and Arbaz Khan. Emergency services rushed the injured to nearby hospitals, where at least ten people were treated for severe burn injuries. Five of the injured remain in critical condition and are receiving treatment at Ratlam Medical College.

Police officials stated that the procession has traditionally followed the same route every year without any major incidents. Preliminary findings suggest that the tazia may have been lifted higher than usual while passing beneath the overhead power line, leading to the fatal contact.
