SIR Drive in Odisha: What the Latest Electoral Roll Update Means

Fresh off the heels of the 2026 general and state elections, the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Odisha has announced the commencement of the SIR (Special Internal Revision) Drive. While electoral rolls are updated annually, the 2026 post-election drive is critical for correcting discrepancies that surfaced during the high-intensity polling in April and May.

What is the SIR Drive?

The SIR Drive is an intensive, time-bound exercise aimed at purifying the electoral database. Unlike the standard continuous updation, the SIR involves booth-level officers (BLOs) conducting physical and digital verifications to ensure that the data on the National Voter Service Portal (NVSP) matches the ground reality.

Key Focus Areas of the 2026 Update:

  • Deletion of 'Permanent Shifted' Voters: A major focus is identifying voters who have moved out of their constituencies permanently but remain on the local rolls.

  • Removal of Deceased Electors: Cleaning the lists of deceased individuals to prevent potential proxy voting.

  • Correction of Clerical Errors: Fixing spelling mistakes in names, father’s names, and addresses which often lead to hassles on polling day.

  • Aadhaar-Voter ID Linking: Continuing the voluntary drive to link Electors Photo Identity Card (EPIC) with Aadhaar for multi-level authentication.

Why the 2026 Update is Different

The 2026 SIR Drive is leveraging new AI-driven deduplication software to spot "Demographically Similar Entries" (DSEs). In previous cycles, a voter might accidentally be registered in both their workplace (like Bhubaneswar) and their hometown (like Sambalpur). The new system flags these duplicates instantly, prompting a manual verification by the BLO.

Timeline for the SIR Drive 2026

The CEO Odisha office has laid out a clear roadmap for the revision process:

  1. House-to-House Verification: May 15 – June 10, 2026.

  2. Publication of Integrated Draft Roll: June 25, 2026.

  3. Filing of Claims and Objections: June 25 – July 24, 2026.

  4. Special Campaign Dates: July 4 and July 18 (Saturday/Sunday) where BLOs will be present at all polling stations.

  5. Final Publication of Electoral Roll: August 20, 2026.

How to Check Your Status

Voters in Odisha can verify their details through three primary channels:

  • Voter Helpline App: Downloadable on Android and iOS for instant digital checking.

  • NVSP Portal: Visit nvsp.in and use the "Search in Electoral Roll" feature.

  • SMS Service: Send EPIC <Space> YourVoterIDNumber to 1950.

For those whose names are missing or incorrect, Form 6 (New Enrollment), Form 7 (Objection/Deletion), and Form 8 (Correction/Shifting) remain the standard tools for rectification.
