Suvendu Adhikari Set to Become West Bengal’s First BJP Chief Minister
By WaveINO Newsroom•May 9, 2026
The political landscape of West Bengal has reached a historic turning point. Following the 2026 Assembly elections, Suvendu Adhikari has been unanimously elected as the leader of the BJP legislature party, making him the first-ever Chief Minister from the Bharatiya Janata Party in the state’s history. The decision, finalized during a high-profile meeting in Kolkata attended by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, marks the culmination of a decade-long struggle by the saffron party to establish a foothold in the eastern stronghold.
The Historic Mandate of 2026
The 2026 West Bengal Assembly election results were nothing short of a political earthquake. The BJP secured a thumping majority with 207 seats in the 294-member house, while the incumbent Trinamool Congress (TMC) was reduced to 80 seats. This victory not only ended Mamata Banerjee’s 15-year tenure but also signaled a massive shift in voter sentiment across both rural and urban Bengal.
Suvendu Adhikari, often called the "Giant Slayer," played a pivotal role in this triumph. He contested and won from two high-stakes constituencies: Nandigram and Bhabanipur. Notably, his victory in Bhabanipur against former CM Mamata Banerjee by a margin of over 15,000 votes cemented his status as the most formidable anti-TMC face in the state.
From Streetfighter to Chief Minister
Suvendu Adhikari’s journey to the top post is a testament to his deep-rooted organizational skills. Born into a political family in Purba Medinipur, his career began in the mid-90s.He rose to national prominence during the 2007 Nandigram land agitation, a movement he spearheaded alongside Mamata Banerjee, which eventually led to the fall of the 34-year-old Left Front regime in 2011.
However, after years as a key lieutenant in the TMC, Adhikari’s relationship with the party soured, leading to his dramatic switch to the BJP in December 2020.Since then, he has served as the Leader of the Opposition, maintaining a relentless campaign against the TMC government. His elevation to Chief Minister is seen as a reward for his consistency and his ability to bridge the gap between the BJP’s central ideology and Bengal’s unique cultural fabric.
A New Direction for West Bengal
As Adhikari prepares to take his oath at the Brigade Parade Ground on May 9, 2026, the expectations are high. In his first address to the newly elected MLAs, he emphasized a shift from "Bhoi" (fear) to "Bhorsa" (faith). His administration is expected to focus on key BJP promises, including the implementation of the 7th Pay Commission for state employees and a rigorous crackdown on undocumented immigration.
Furthermore, Adhikari has announced plans for a commission headed by a retired judge to investigate allegations of corruption and crimes from the previous regime. By choosing a leader from the rural heartland of Medinipur, the BJP has also effectively countered the "outsider" narrative often used by its opponents, placing a "son of the soil" at the helm of the state.
