Tiruvallur, Tamil Nadu: The death toll from a devastating ammonia gas leak at a seafood processing facility in Tamil Nadu's Tiruvallur district has risen to eight, with around 70 workers continuing to receive treatment in hospitals, according to officials.
The incident occurred on Sunday when ammonia gas reportedly leaked from the plant's refrigeration system, exposing workers inside the facility to toxic fumes. Most of those affected were women employed at the seafood processing unit, with a significant number of workers belonging to migrant communities from Odisha and Assam.
Emergency services rushed to the scene shortly after the leak was reported. Several workers complained of breathing difficulties, dizziness, nausea, and unconsciousness following exposure to the gas. Ambulances transported dozens of victims to nearby hospitals, where medical teams worked through the night to provide emergency treatment.
Authorities confirmed that eight women succumbed to their injuries, while many others remain under observation. Hospital officials stated that several patients required intensive medical care due to the severity of their exposure.
The tragedy has sparked widespread concern among worker welfare groups and labor organizations, particularly because many of the affected employees were migrant workers living far from their home states. Families of the victims have been informed, and arrangements are being made to provide assistance and support.
District officials, police authorities, and industrial safety inspectors have launched an investigation into the cause of the leak. Preliminary reports suggest that the incident may have originated from equipment used in the facility's cold-storage and refrigeration operations, where ammonia is commonly used as a refrigerant.
Experts note that ammonia, while widely used in industrial refrigeration systems, can become extremely dangerous when released into enclosed spaces. High concentrations of the gas can cause severe respiratory distress, eye irritation, lung damage, and, in extreme cases, death.
The Tamil Nadu government has assured that a thorough inquiry will be conducted to determine whether safety protocols were followed and whether negligence contributed to the accident. Officials are also reviewing emergency preparedness measures at the facility.
The incident has once again brought attention to workplace safety standards in industrial facilities across India. Labor rights advocates have called for stricter enforcement of safety regulations, regular equipment inspections, and improved emergency response training to prevent similar disasters in the future.
As investigators continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the leak, families of the victims and injured workers await answers about how such a tragedy could occur. The findings of the inquiry are expected to play a crucial role in determining accountability and shaping future industrial safety measures.
For now, the focus remains on the recovery of the hospitalized workers and support for the families who have lost their loved ones in one of the state's deadliest industrial accidents in recent years.
