Viral Video of White Tiger at Patna Zoo Sparks Outrage; PETA India Demands Relocation to Sanctuary.

In late February 2026, a viral video showing a white tiger in a seemingly distressed and weak state at Patna’s Sanjay Gandhi Biological Park (popularly known as Patna Zoo) ignited a wave of concern and debate across social media platforms. The footage, shared widely on X and other networks, portrayed the tiger pacing slowly and appearing visibly thin — images that many viewers found alarming and evocative of poor treatment.

 What Exactly Happened?

The video, reportedly filmed by visitors inside the zoo enclosure, showed the white tiger standing motionlessly for extended periods and moving sluggishly — a stark contrast to what most imagine when picturing a powerful big cat. Viewers quickly questioned whether the animal was receiving adequate nutrition, veterinary attention, and enrichment in its habitat.

Social media users posted the video with captions alleging neglect and calling on animal welfare groups and authorities to intervene, tagging organisations like PETA India and government officials in hopes of generating swift action.

 PETA India Steps In

Responding to the public outcry, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA India) publicly urged Patna Zoo authorities to take the matter seriously. In its statement, PETA flagged potential signs of “zoochosis” — a stress-related condition seen in captive animals confined to restrictive spaces without adequate enrichment. The organisation recommended that, if necessary, the tiger be relocated to a sanctuary where it could potentially enjoy more space and specialised care.

PETA’s appeal was directed not only at the zoo management but also at the Central Zoo Authority (CZA), the Bihar Chief Minister, and the state’s Department of Environment — urging systemic oversight rather than just a reactive fix.

 Zoo’s Response

In response to mounting pressure, zoo officials released a brief statement asserting that the white tiger was medically fit, well-fed, and regularly assessed by veterinarians, dismissing claims of neglect. They maintained that the animal’s health parameters were within normal ranges and that the viral footage did not reflect its overall condition.

Despite the clarification, many on social media remained sceptical, with users calling for independent veterinary evaluation and greater transparency from the zoo administration to reassure the public about the tiger’s welfare.

A Wider Debate About Zoos and Animal Welfare

The incident has reignited a broader discussion in India about the role of modern zoos, especially in the context of large predators like tigers. Critics argue that captive environments often fail to meet the complex psychological and physical needs of such animals, advocating for better standards of care, larger habitats, and a shift toward sanctuaries or protected reserves.

Supporters of more oversight also say that episodes like this reveal the urgent need for transparent reporting and independent monitoring of animal health in zoological parks. Many believe that merely asserting that an animal is “fine” is not enough — especially when stark video footage paints a different picture.
