PANIHATI, WEST BENGAL — Political tension in West Bengal has escalated significantly following a crude bomb attack in Panihati late Wednesday evening, leaving at least five BJP workers injured. The incident occurred in Ward No. 2 along Dutta Road, just hours after the fatal shooting of Chandranath Rath, a close aide to senior BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari.
The Panihati Blast: Targeted Attack
The explosion took place near the St. Xavier's Institute while a group of BJP workers were interacting with local residents.
The Incident: According to eyewitnesses and police reports, four unidentified miscreants on motorcycles approached the group and hurled country-made bombs before fleeing the scene.
Casualties: At least five workers sustained injuries and were immediately rushed to RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. Their condition is currently reported as stable.
Location Significance: The site of the blast is notably close to the residence of BJP MLA Ratna Debnath.
Broader Wave of Post-Poll Unrest
The Panihati blast is not an isolated event but part of a broader surge in violence following the 2026 Assembly Election results.
Madhyamgram Shooting: Earlier the same night, Chandranath Rath, a personal assistant to Suvendu Adhikari, was shot dead in what police described as a "planned hit" involving 10 rounds of gunfire.
Basirhat Violence: In a separate incident, BJP worker Rohit Roy was shot in the abdomen in the Gotra area of Basirhat while putting up party flags.
Sandeshkhali Clashes: On May 5, several police and central force personnel were injured by gunfire and pellets during disturbances in Sandeshkhali.
Administrative and Political Response
The Chief Election Commissioner, Gyanesh Kumar, has taken serious note of the deteriorating law and order situation and has issued strict directives to the Chief Secretary and DGP to arrest all perpetrators immediately.
Police Action: As of Thursday, the West Bengal Police have filed over 200 FIRs, arrested 433 individuals, and detained over 1,000 others under preventive sections.
Security Deployment: Additional police forces and central armed forces have been deployed to sensitive areas to conduct continuous patrolling and prevent further escalation.
Political Blame Game: The BJP has accused the Trinamool Congress (TMC) of orchestrating these attacks as part of a "politics of vendetta". Conversely, the TMC has dismissed these claims as "baseless and politically motivated".
