WhatsApp AI Scam Call Block Feature: How to Activate in India

The rise of "Digital Arrest" scams and sophisticated KYC frauds has made smartphone security a top priority for Indian users. In April 2026, following a massive crackdown that saw over 9,400 accounts banned in India, WhatsApp introduced advanced AI-driven safeguards. These features are designed to identify impersonators and block suspicious interactions before they lead to financial loss.

If you are an Indian user looking to fortify your account, here is everything you need to know about activating these new AI protections.

The 2026 AI Security Update: What’s New?

WhatsApp’s latest security architecture uses Large Language Models (LLMs) and computer vision to monitor behavioral patterns. Key updates include:

  1. AI Logo Detection: Automatically flags accounts using official government or police insignia to prevent impersonation.

  2. Contextual Alerts: Shows the "Account Age" for unknown contacts, helping you spot burner accounts created by scammers.

  3. Behavioral Blocking: Suspends accounts that exhibit "scam-like" calling patterns, such as calling multiple unrelated numbers in rapid succession.

Step-by-Step Guide: How to Activate Scam Protection

While the AI-backend works automatically, you must enable certain privacy settings to allow the system to effectively "shield" your incoming calls.

1. Enable "Silence Unknown Callers"

This is the most effective way to stop international scam calls (often starting with +92, +84, or +234) from reaching you.

  • Open WhatsApp and tap the three dots (Android) or Settings (iOS).

  • Go to Privacy > Calls.

  • Toggle the switch for Silence Unknown Callers to 'On'.

  • Result: Calls from unknown numbers will still appear in your Call tab but won't ring your phone, allowing the AI to scan them for fraud signals in the background.

2. Activate Account Age & Profile Protection

To prevent scammers from seeing your details or tricking you with fake profiles:

  • In Privacy Settings, set your Profile Photo and About to "My Contacts."

  • When you receive a message from an unknown number, look for the new "Contextual Card." This 2026 feature displays how long that account has been on WhatsApp. If it's a "New Account," treat it with high suspicion.

3. Reporting for AI Training

The AI becomes smarter when users report scams. If you receive a "Digital Arrest" threat:

  • Do not reply.

  • Tap on the contact name and select Report Contact.

  • Check the box for Block contact and delete chat. This sends the last five messages to the AI model to help it recognize similar patterns across India.
