WhatsApp for iOS Is Getting Its Own Cloud—Goodbye, Apple Storage Warnings!

For years, iPhone users have faced a familiar and frustrating digital bottleneck. You buy a premium iOS device, only to find Apple’s paltry 5GB of free iCloud storage instantly devoured by photos, system files, and the absolute heaviest offender of all: your WhatsApp backup. Once that limit is breached, Apple aggressively prompts you to upgrade to a paid iCloud+ plan.

But Meta is preparing a structural maneuver that could disrupt this ecosystem entirely.

In a development that directly challenges Apple's lock-in storage mechanics, WhatsApp is building its own native cloud backup system for iOS. Discovered in the WhatsApp beta for iOS version 26.28.10.16 via Apple’s TestFlight platform, this unreleased feature allows users to back up their chats directly to WhatsApp’s own servers instead of relying on iCloud.

A 2GB "Free Pass" Outside of Apple's Walls

According to insider reports, when the feature officially launches, iOS users will be presented with a direct choice within their chat settings: stick with the default iCloud backup, or switch entirely to WhatsApp’s independent cloud infrastructure.

Meta plans to offer every user 2GB of free cloud storage space specifically earmarked for WhatsApp chats, media, and documents. While 2GB might seem modest for those with decade-long media histories, it completely detaches WhatsApp from the shared 5GB iCloud pool. This instantly liberates crucial storage space on the iPhone for native system backups, live photos, and app documents.

+-------------------------------------------------------------------+
| THE CURRENT VS. UPCOMING SYSTEM |
+------------------------------------+------------------------------+
| Current iCloud Backup | Upcoming WhatsApp Cloud |
+------------------------------------+------------------------------+
| • Shared across all Apple data | • Dedicated WhatsApp storage |
| • Part of the tight 5GB free limit | • Includes 2GB free storage |
| • E2E Encryption is OPT-IN | • E2E Encryption is DEFAULT |
+------------------------------------+------------------------------+

For users who blow past the 2GB limit, Meta is preparing competitive premium storage tiers. Early string code indicates the app will offer a 50GB tier for approximately $0.99 (Rs. 95) per month, mirroring Apple’s entry-level iCloud+ price point but keeping the data natively managed. Rumors also hint at a massive 1TB storage plan for power users, which might eventually be bundled with the premium 'WhatsApp Plus' subscription plans.

Mandatory Security: Encryption by Default

Meta's custom backup plan isn’t just a financial counter-strategy against Apple’s cloud services; it’s a security play.

On the current iOS infrastructure, syncing a WhatsApp backup to iCloud does not guarantee end-to-end encryption by default. Users must manually dive into the settings, locate the toggle, and secure it with a custom 64-digit key or password—an extra step most everyday consumers overlook.

Under Meta’s new native cloud backup, end-to-end encryption is mandatory and automatically enabled. There is no turning it off. Backups will be sealed utilizing modern passkeys (biometrics like FaceID/TouchID), a password, or a 64-digit key. Because only the account owner holds the decryption key, neither WhatsApp nor Meta can view or share your stored chat logs.

Breaking the Platform Barrier

Beyond reducing iCloud storage fatigue, this architectural shift solves one of the oldest pain points in mobile tech: cross-platform migration.

Historically, moving your chats from an iPhone to an Android device (or vice versa) has been incredibly tedious. Because iOS backups are locked to iCloud and Android backups are locked to Google Drive, users have had to rely on physical cable connections or local QR-code transfers during the initial device setup.

By building a unified, native cloud infrastructure across both Android and iOS, Meta could theoretically allow users to log in, decrypt, and pull their chat backups down from any device, regardless of the operating system. WhatsApp is already developing this exact same native backup service on Android to serve as an alternative to Google Drive, preparing a balanced cross-platform ecosystem.

While Meta has yet to confirm a public release date, code found in the iOS TestFlight build signals that the platform-free backup transition is actively in progress. Apple’s lucrative cloud storage lock-in may be facing its most formidable opponent yet.
