Woman Allegedly Assaulted Inside Private Sleeper Bus in Delhi; 2 Arrested

In a chilling reminder of past tragedies, a 30-year-old woman was allegedly assaulted inside a private sleeper bus in North West Delhi’s Rani Bagh area. The victim, a factory worker and mother of three, was returning home from her shift on the night of May 11, 2026. According to police reports, the incident unfolded near the B-Block bus stand in Saraswati Vihar when the woman approached a man standing at the door of the bus to inquire about the time.

Instead of providing information, the man allegedly dragged her into the vehicle. The bus, which reportedly had curtains covering the windows, then moved toward the Nangloi area. It was during this journey that the driver and the conductor allegedly committed the assault. The woman was later abandoned near the Nangloi Metro station, from where she managed to contact the authorities.

Police Action and Arrests

Following the victim's complaint, the Delhi Police acted swiftly. An FIR was registered at the Rani Bagh police station under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including gang rape and common intention. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer) Vikram Singh confirmed that multiple teams were deployed to track the suspects.

The two accused, identified as the bus driver Umesh and the conductor Ramendra, were apprehended within hours of the report. The Bihar-registered sleeper bus involved in the crime has been seized for forensic examination. Investigators are currently scanning CCTV footage along the 7-km route the bus traversed to verify the sequence of events and check if safety mechanisms, such as automatic doors, were compromised.

Political Reaction and Safety Demands

The incident has sparked widespread outrage and political debate regarding the safety of women in the national capital. Comparisons are being drawn to the 2012 Nirbhaya case, with opposition leaders questioning the effectiveness of existing safety measures. The National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken suo motu cognisance of the matter, seeking a detailed action report from the Delhi Police Commissioner within seven days.

Public outcry has intensified over the lack of monitoring for private bus operators, particularly during late-night hours. Residents and activists are demanding stricter verification of transport staff and better patrolling in industrial hubs like Mangolpuri to prevent such heinous crimes.
