History of the Padma Awards The Padma Awards are among India’s highest civilian honours, instituted to recognize distinguished service and exceptional contributions in various fields.
 Institution Year: 1954
Introduced by: Government of India
Purpose: To honor citizens and occasionally foreigners who contributed to arts, literature, education, sports, medicine, social work, science, public affairs, and trade & industry. Initially, the Padma Vibhushan had three classes: “Pahela Varg,” “Dusra Varg,” and “Tisra Varg,” which were later reorganized in 1955 as Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Shri.

 Padma Vibhushan – For exceptional and distinguished service
Padma Bhushan – For distinguished service of a high order.
Padma Shri – For distinguished service in any field 
Announcement and Conferment Announced annually on the eve of Republic Day (January 26) Conferred by the President of India at Rashtrapati Bhavan.

 First Awards (1954):
Padma Vibhushan: 6 recipients.
Padma Bhushan: 23 recipients.
 Padma Shri: 17–19 recipients.

1.Dr. Satyendra Nath Bose
Field: Science (Physics)
Why: For his revolutionary work in quantum mechanics. The Bose–Einstein theory and bosons are named after him, making him one of India’s greatest scientists.
2.C. Rajagopalachari
Field: Public Affairs
Why: A senior freedom fighter, statesman, and the last Governor-General of India.
3.Dr. Zakir Husain
Field: Education & Public Service
Why: For his contribution to education and nation-building. He later became the President of India. 4.Balasaheb Gangadhar Kher
Field: Public Affairs
Why: For his role in the freedom movement and public administration.
5.V. K. Krishna Menon
Field: Public Affairs / Diplomacy
Why:Menon was a close aide of Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and an influential diplomat and politician.
6.Jigme Dorji Wangchuck
Field: Public Affairs / International Relations
Why: Jigme Dorji Wangchuck was the Third King of Bhutan (r. 1952–1972), known as the “Father of Modern Bhutan.
